So you’ve been told to avoid fish because of mercury, have you? It’s true, fish contains mercury. But did you know that there is an important mineral – one that most of us are lacking in – which helps the body to excrete the mercury content in the fish we eat?

It’s selenium.

Mercury is attracted to and it attaches itself to selenium.  This causes the body to excrete the mercury found in fish. This has been observed by a number of researchers and learned scientists in the academic and scientific communities.

This little-known fact about seafood is something that is being hidden from the consumer public.  It’s pretty exciting to be able to write about this because for decades, mainstream medical sources have scared us into thinking that we need to limit our fish intake due to mercury content found there. The good news is, you can stop worrying about eating fish and getting mercury poisoning.

Fish have been part of a nutrient-dense diet the world over, by populations both near seafaring villages and those from afar. This food provides essential elements for health - fat-soluble vitamins A, D, Omega 3s, minerals like iron, zinc, phosphorus, calcium, manganese selenium, and magnesium. These foods have long been considered a critical part of a pregnant, nursing, and planning to conceive diet for mothers, as well as brain food for children.

My research document on this subject which took multiple months to complete, was a project I completed for the Green Pasture Products web site.  Green Pasture Products produces the only fermented cod liver oil in the world, and combines this raw food with high-vitamin butter oil to achieve the “X-Factor” discovered by Dr. Weston A. Price who traveled the world in the 1930s to discover the reason for degenerative disease and dental caries among his patients in the U.S.  Green Pasture Products fermented cod liver oil is the only brand of cod liver oil my family uses.

David Wetzel, owner of GPP, was kind enough to allow Sandrine Hahn of Nourishing Our Children to feature it on her site as a guest post yesterday.

Here are the links to this research paper I prepared, with important information about why we should include fish in our diet for the many nutritional benefits to ours and our children’s health.

Part II

You may also be thinking that fish are dangerous to consume because of radiation. Radiation is something that is found everywhere, in everything…in plants, grains, and animal products. If we are to completely avoid radiation, we’d have to stop eating altogether. So is this the answer? I think not.

There are plenty of precautions we can take to help protect our bodies from radiation. Here are some links to articles from experts in this field:

If we take care of ourselves, source our foods from the safest possible places, and eat these foods in the traditional ways our ancestors have, our health will be optimal. Avoiding healthy foods because of scare tactics by the mainstream media, health and medical authorities is wholly unfounded. It doesn’t acknowledge current research, and is harmful to our health.
